Something about the crackily texture of a mousse product appeals to me but I don’t have much luck with it.

Mousse reminds me of the crunchy haired girls at school, who would cover the school floors with white flakes as they swooshed their hair around.

Tentatively, we look at the Shu Uemura UV Base which has recently been reformulated:

They say that the benefits are:

- Improved make-up staying power
- Improved colour vibrancy
- Provides SPF protection against harmful UV rays
- Unique ultra light mousse texture

This mousse although light, does indeed offer a SPF of 30 and offers to smooth out the skin for foundation application.

Here is the mousse – isn’t it the most perfect dollop?

As I mentioned earlier I have used the older formula before and although I liked it, it always felt a tad sticky on the skin and left a slightly ashy cast on my face.

I did finish the product though, but I think that’s because I found using a mousse as a primer quite good fun in the mornings.

This UV Mousse Base from Shu Uemura is a vast improvement on the last formula. In fact, its a BRILLIANT primer even though it seems so odd to use mousse of the face.

It is like a proper mousse – like air spray mousse, not a thick thing!

You only need a tiny amount of this stuff – being mousse it breaks down easily and you spread it all over your face. Takes seconds as it absorbs quickly.

You won’t get streaks if you help it along and rub or pat it in, however if you leave it on your face without any blending you will get bizarre patches on your cheek.

Where the previous mousse left an ashy look on me, this one doesn’t. It shrinks the pores and smooths out the base (and I did think my foundation lasted longer).

This doesn’t perfect your skin on its own, I think, unless you already have pretty damn good skin. It does prep the face though, and makes it a perfect canvas for make up to adhere to.

Overall, this base is expensive (£28) but well worth it if you are serious about primers. Its a great alternative to the usual primers that can be too creamy or too siliconey as this mousse keeps your skin feeling fresh.

Thanks for the review, but somehow it’s really streaky on your face? Maybe you used too much of it..

Hi Kerry

This mousse dries…a little streaky. It’s the way foam settles on the skin. I’ve had old and new versions nad they’ve both done that but it doesn’t affect the foundation on top.

Hi Sara

The cream looks lovely! I am completely swamped with primers at the moment but I’ll try it at some point x
