As a rule, I never read the instructions to anything because I reckon I can figure it out…so when I saw L’oreal Studio Secrets Smokes Eyeshadow Quad I knew I had to buy one because it looked like the kind of thing that had instructions, that I could deliberately not read.

The L’oreal Smokes Eyeshadow Quad is a simple little thing to use – there are four colours, all numbered and there’s a clear guide on the back where to use them. This is nothing new I guess – Japanese brands have done this for a long time, but let’s just pretend it’s innovative…

There’s four variations with this quad, Colbat Smokes, Forest Smokes, Lavender Smokes, Blackened Smokes.

I bought Forest Smokes as there’s a green edge to it. This palette was recommended for green eyes, but who cares, I like it!

So the four shades are chosen to co-ordinate with each other.
You get a pale white, a gold, a brown and a dark blackened green for the smoked look.

This video here explains the application procedure.

Swatches – the metallics (gold and brown) and lacking lustre – they just look quite chalky with a bit of glitter on top. The darkest shade, the blackened green is just disappointing – it’s not low on pigment as such, it’s just not a creamy, rich shade at all:

I started following their guide but it was all a little odd – use the darkest shade as a liner, use the white under the brow, use the gold to blend in the green…bleh. Not particularly inspired by the results:

Verdict:

Nice idea, nice quads, poor eyeshadows – not HIDEOUS but in comparison to other make up I have, let’s face it, this is POOR. Wouldn’t really recommend when you can buy decent products for around the same price from other brands to be honest.

I paid about $8 for this on eBay.

I never read them and do as I think is best and it's never caused me any problems so far!

I have one just like that except better quality from maybelline. It’s called the maybelline studio quad looks better quality than this one and its a lot more pigmented!

The only downside to that is it’s very shimmery but then that depends on what you like :)

The colors are beautiful, but the swatches are disappointing! No pigmentation at all ! :/
