I am utterly obsessed with anti bacterial hand gel – I am always applying it, because as well as killing germs, it also (I think) gets rid of the greasy feeling from your hands, such as after eating and after applying make up.
I will use all kinds of anti-bacterial hand gel, cheap and pricey although I noticed that some really do dry your hands out quite badly.
This Melvita Gel Purifiant Mains is my current handbag companion. It does contain alcohol, but doesn’t dry my hands out:
Rich in Thyme, Pink Peppercorn, Tea Tree and Lemon Myrtle Essential Oils, this hand gel offers strong cleansing and purifying properties.
It costs £6 for 50ml which doesn’t make is as cheap as other handy sized bottles of sanitizer but you seem to get more with this one.The other thing I do with this hand gel is squirt it on my iphone (yes really) and surfaces that need a quick clean….the alcohol gives me a smear free finish! But it does have to be a alcohol based one and not with any additives like colour or moisturizers…
Anyway, back to this hand gel!
I really like it! I’ve been using it every day and I haven’t noticed my hands getting drier (I always forget to apply hand cream too).
It has a fresh smell – I do quite like scented hand gels, Radox does a really nice one (Magnolia I think it is?) which I find comforting. This is a fresh scent and it disappears a little after the product has dried off (about 15 seconds).
The gel:
Do you need a posh hand sanitizer?
Well I guess it depends how much you use them – I use them all the time so will pay more for a non drying one for my hands. If you use yours just occasionally I do find the cheaper pocket sized ones (Carex, Radox) from Boots do quite well. A large tube of these are usually good for the work desk too!
See the product here.

I’m a bit obsessive with antibacterial hand gels and surface sprays, probably because of where I work (I come in contact with a lot of germy people!). I literally have a hand gel in every bag and every coat pocket, and they also sell little handy surface sprays in the poundshop so you can wipe down keyboards, phones, door handles. Yeah…probably a bit OTT lol

The formulation is quite interesting. Glyceryl caprylate sounds very chemical but it is actually derived pretty directly from coconut oil. Its been touted as an antibacterial for a while but doesn’t work well enough to really be very useful as a mainline active. But for a product that you use two or three times a day, its mildness could well be an advantage. And you have the alcohol as well. If it doesn’t dry out your skin it could be a very handy product for a lot of people – thanks for drawing it to my attention.
