It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed a make up book, even though I collect them, there haven’t been many new ones that have caught my eye of late. Many make up books are repetitive I find, and cover points for the beginner who know nothing about make up. Some books are creative and gorgeous to look at but don’t cover technique. My favourite books are the ones somewhere in-between and my favourite will always been Kevyn Aucoin’s books.
So what was I expecting from ‘Simply Glamourous’ by celebrity make up artist, Gary Cockerill?
I really wasn’t too sure. Gary is a make up artist who has worked with celebrities like Kelly brook, Isla Fisher, Rachel Hunter, Eva Longoria and famously Katie Price. I expected a book of quite bold strong make up looks which is all fine and well but not necessarily for everyone.
Anyway – I was pleasantly surprised by the book – visually it’s very nice to look at and reminds me of the Kevyn Aucoin books, especially the step by step application pages.
The book covers the basically like skincare (although not super comprehensively), and the different types of make up formulas for example and a bit of colour theory. It’s a good start for beginners to make up who don’t know where to begin.
There are a number of looks throughout the book which go from natural to super glam and I love the step by step photos which make it really clear how to apply the make up.
There is a nice mix of models from famous to girl next door, different skin tones and age groups which is a good thing.
For me this book has a lot of ‘ideas’ for looks, and step by step tutorials but I find some make up books shy away from. If you are going to show a complicated look then I think a clear step by step is expected, so I am glad Gary has done that in this book.
I absolutely love the ‘favourite products’ section – he actually names his favourite products by name, such as skincare, make up and tools. Many books shy away from naming exact brands and I understand why because it can date a book – but I am glad it is there so there’s no second guessing what he uses and loves.
Who would I recommend this book to?
Anyone with a keen interest in make up. If you want to do natural make up and nothing else for the rest of your life you probably won’t be interested in this. But if you want to expand your horizons a bit and learn new techniques and styles then you’ll love this book. There’s a lot to look at and ideas to be had! For someone who knows a bit about make up like me, I still like this book because of the gorgeous photography and interesting looks.
