Sometimes a new beauty product comes out and everyone starts raving about how wonderful it is – so much so that although I wasn’t actually that interested in Rimmel’s new Apocalips Lip Lacquer release, I decided that a good beauty blogger would make an effort to review these regardless.
So here they are! There was a 3 for 2 on at Boots so I chose three colours. They had around 5 shades to chose from, not the full 8, so I picked three in-between wearable colours.
I picked -
The earth-shattering lip lacquer from Rimmel London combining the intense colour of lipstick with a lacquer like shine, Apocalips Lip Lacquer is an explosive make-up phenomenon that represents the end of colour as you know it. Packed with pure colour pigments, its lusciously creamy, conditioning formula promises a never-before combination of colour, shine and comfort that last and last.
Well, I’ll be the judge of that!
The packaging is plastic, and actually chic for Rimmel (not that I dislike Rimmel packaging, I just remember what it used to look like with that weird dark burgundy packaging). I like the choice of packing for this. When removing the applicator for the first time, there’s a soul destroying moment where you must ruin the perfectly clean top end of the tube.
Here are the colours.
500 Luna – milky orange
101 Celestial – MLBB mid tone rose
102 Nova – brighter blue pink
The applicator caught my eye right away – it has a dip in it and reminds me of various Japanese lip glosses which had a dip in the sponges – this little well holds more product and means you usually have enough in ‘one dip’ for your lips.
On the Rimmel Apocalips it doesn’t work. The sponge is too hard, the plastic in it, I guess, is too stiff therefore, you never actually get the product in the well on to your lips unless you physically scoop it out. On a good brush, the sponge is soft enough so that you can flex it and get all the product on your lips. In a good applicator, like this Esprique gloss, all of the product would apply on the lips.
Onwards – these lip lacquers are indeed very rich and pigmented. No shimmer here, just lots of creamy pigment. Swatches:
I wasn’t disappointed by this at all, although I did think the lip colours looked almost a bit cartoony- like paint. It’s hard to imagine how that orange, despite being nice to look at – would translate nicely on the face.
Speaking of paint – this stuff doesn’t smell nice. It doesn’t smell foul at all, but it’s like a bland poster paint smell .Whilst I am not into mega doses of perfume in my lip products, I wish it wasn’t so…clinical.
Lip swatches. Luna looks more nude beige orange on me:
I must point out that this product looks BAD on flaky dry lips. DOESN’T EVERYTHING you scream? No, not really. I have lipsticks and glosses that can make parched lips look ok, but this one looked hideous on first application when I had some flakes on the bottom lip. It accentuates dryness despite the fact it isn’t a drying lip colour.
Anyway so I scrubbed before application. Celestial is my favourite:
Here it is in a face shot – see, I have seen swatches of this on some ladies and the colours really look bright. On my olive skin tone I have to say, the colours actually erred on the side of natural.
This is my best bitchface:
Finally Nova which is a hot pink looked like this – I prefer more blue to make it a really bold blue pink (like MAC Candy yum yum!) as sometimes, this sort of pink can look old lady-ish on me:
Oh, longevity; this did NOT stain my lips at all, and it lasted about 1 hour as bold as above and sort of gently faded away. It is not particularly long lasting.
Despite my moans about the packaging, the scent, the lack of longevity, how the colours are cartoonish – I DO actually like this product. For the price of £5.99 each, you won’t find many other super pigmented lip colours like this with this nice lacquer texture. For that reason I would definitely say try it if you want a liquid lipstick on a budget. But will I run back and get more shades? Nah, not unless they release something quite interesting like a blackberry shade? But otherwise I have better glosses and lipsticks in my stash.
