So my favourite foundation formula of all formulas is the cream compact, the reason being that it is for me the quickest base to apply, plus it seems to work on my dry skin.
Having said that it’s hard finding a good cream foundation – I have tried them all (probably) and they are either quite dry, dense waxy products that are hard to spread (ie. MAC BB Compact) or extremely creamy and sit on the face and look greasy (Bourjois). My current pick is Nars Radiant Cream Compact Foundation (I’ve bought the refill twice) but I’ve decided it doesn’t last particularly well even though the texture is nice.
When I saw the new Paul & Joe Gel Foundation I had to buy it to try:
The product comes in two parts, you need the refill and the case. IPriced at £12 for the case and £20 for the refill, it’s not cheap but the refill price is not bad. It’s just as well as I work through cream foundations extremely quickly.
Here is the case – it’s a bit on the chunky side which I find annoying because it’s hard to fit in my make up bag, but I carry in my bag nonetheless since it has a handy mirror. The case is though, very pretty:
I chose shade 40 (the darkest is 50 Caramel) for my NC35 skintone. It matches ok, in the daylight at times I felt it looked a little pale and yet I thought Caramel looked too dark (the hazards of buying online). Next time I will try shade 50.
At first I thought there was a mesh covering the foundation like a cushion, but it’s just the pattern on the foundation. It actually says in the instructions to not press to hard to avoid crushing the foundation as it is soft (not that it’s a problem if you do, it’ll just look messy!).
Whilst the texture is soft, to me it is no softer than my NARS foundation, of Shiseido’s cream compact etc. It’s soft and easy to spread, and certainly buildable. It sort of semi dries to leave a matte but glowing complexion too.
There is a sheerness to the foundation (as you can see from my hand swatch) but when I layered it on areas with more imperfections I was impressed by the coverage and also how it didn’t look heavy at all.
I wore this foundation all day and apart from some areas where the base disappeared like my cheeks, overall it clung on well leaving me with an evened out, glowing yet none shiny finish. I was really impressed by this foundation so this will be my new go to Cream Base. Downside is I know I will work through this fast because it is so soft and creamy.
Here it is on my tired face – I think it makes me look more awake!?
Verdict: Must have for cream foundation lovers – better than most cushion compacts which dry out quickly and works well on my extreme combo skin (very dry cheeks, oily nose and forehead).
