Not Lip Gloss, Not Lip Stick: Fyrinnae Lip Lustres Review

I have a lot of time for Fyrinnae, even though they take a while to get orders out and I recently made a small haul which included two Lip Lustres.

Fyrinnae are clear that these are:

- Not Lip Glosses

These are non sticky lip stains that leave a colour on the lips that is opaque, or semi-sheer.

They also state that this product is quite a dry product but it isn’t drying.

I bought two full sizes to try out – Flavour of the Day (semi-sheer peach) and Deceptive Innocence (a nude beige).

The texture of these lip lustres are very light, like a thin liquid lip balm. It smells a bit mango-ey (to me – probably the butters) and the colour is very dense despite being thin.

Flavour of the Day:

A bit too pearly for me.

I love the pigmentation of these but I have a problem with how they feel on my lips – almost like….cheap lip balm. There’s a grittyness to them when I rub my lips together.

I know that from my soapmaking that if you overheat butters it can go gritty so you have to be gentle when you melt it down. It could be that I have a bad batch that was over heated hence the gritty feeling – but it really put me off it. I like things to feel as smooth and hydrating as possible on my lips.

Deceptive Innocence:

This is such a pretty nude colour!

Despite the fact I’m not sure of the texture I would try more shades but in the small sample sizes. There’s some colours, like the reds which I am sure would look gorgeous on.

As a lip stain, it certainly not drying and a far better alternative to a traditional lip stain – having said that, it didn’t really last that long on me – as long as your average lipstick.

The ingredients list is impressive:

Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil, Mica, Caprylic/Capric/Stearic Glycerides, Orbignya Oleifera (Babassu) Seed Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Iron Oxides, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E, as a natural oil preservative), Flavor (lip-safe fragrance).

May contain: Titanium Dioxide, Tin Oxide, Manganese Violet, Synthetic Flurophogopite, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate.

So my overall view on this product is both positive and negative. This was only about $5 so it wasn’t a bad punt.

Ever tried a lip lustre?

I’ve tried a few colors and found them awful. They were so chalky and opaque that I just gave up on them.

I have several of these, and I consider them wonderful. I don’t have the same problem with them as I do with lip glosses: most lip glosses feel much too thick on me, and I can’t really wait to get them off.

My favorite so far has been Type A, which is a really pretty pinkish red, but their other colors, especially the more unusual ones, are also useful. Even if you don’t wear them alone, I find that that they are excellent for adjusting my other lipcolors that are just a wee bit off.

As for the texture, I remembered that they posted in their blog about how lustres should be more like softened butter than anything else, and that if they are gritty or runny, you should mail the company. Sure enough, Grey of Gothique, I believe, emailed them about it, and they replaced her lip lustres for free.

My experiences with the Fyrinnae boys have been nothing short of amazing, which leads me to believe that they provide good and consistent customer service. Thus, I think contacting them is definitely worth a try. They usually spare no expense for correcting issues.

i remember buying two sample tubes of the lustres and both were bitty and not that great. I emailed them and bingo got sent replacements which are pretty good. So might be worth emailing them to let them know.
