This is OT, but besides Make Up, I have another love; Books!
Although I never got further than the first Harry Potter book, I am well aware that the series has been a revolution for children’s fantasy books! There has always been the classics, like Narnia and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials Trilogy. However – Harry Potter is the god of them in terms of success and spread.
Anyway, a few months ago, JK Rowling announced she had produced seven hand written and illustrated books called The Tales of Beedle the Bard.
I remember the guide price was something like 20 – 30k. I thought this estimate sounded low, since JK Rowling and anything associated to the Potter Phenomenon is big bucks!
But I was surprised and sort of please to find out the Amazon had won the book and has posted photographs of it here.
Isn’t it gorgeous? I love the illustrations to, done in blue ink. I have a picture of it here:
Oh, the price was £1,950,000….way above the estimate, no?!
The proceeds of the book go the Rowling’s charity, The Children’s Voice, which works to protect vulnerable children, orphans and disabled children especially across Eastern Europe. This affects four main countries, Romania, Czech Republic, Armenia and Georgia. 2 Million pounds will make such a big difference so I was quite excited to see Amazon shell it out (hey, something like 800 quid of it has been made off me!)
There are lots of articles on the net regarding abuse and SERIOUS neglect in care homes and orphanages in these countries, give it a Google or there is a good article here. Whilst we are in the season of excess and gluttony it is a good time to think about others and perhaps make a donation to charity whilst we are at it!
** Who are the other six lucky enough to receive a copy? Because you know, Ebay would be awfully tempting, no?!
