There was once a beautiful Jo Malone candle called Green Tomato Leaf, which I fell in love with but I couldn’t quite get myself to part with £44 smackers for the greens-tangy-refreshing scent…so I pined for the tomatoey scent until one day, I spotted this Tomato Leaf & Geranium scented candle in Wax Lyrical….
Let me talk quickly about Wax Lyrical. I have been aware of the brand for a few years and I am lucky to live very close to one of their outlet stores. I wanted to tell you more but their ‘About Us’ page isn’t working at the time of writing – but what I do know is that it is a British brand and the products are made in England. Their range is vast, like Yankee Candles and they also do accessories and reed diffusers. I always always go in to the store when I go to the outlet shopping centre.
I digress. I spotted their candle ages ago but at £8, it was half price (down from £16 – which is still the current retail price) but I still didn’t bite. Then I went to the shops last weekend an these candles were THREE QUID EACH.
My waiting paid off! £3! You can’t buy a Air Wick candle for that!
Now these candles are from the “Kitchen Garden” range (view it here). The range consists of candles and reed diffusers with the following scents:
– Tomato Leaf & Geranium
– Blackberry & Basil
– Fig & Quince
– Spiced Pear & Nutmeg
– Rhubarb & Ginger
I love the sound of ALL of them. These are totally up my street – not overly sweet or flowery, also interesting but pleasant. I was being good so I only bought too to check that they actually smelt of something when burned.
I picked Tomato of course and Blackberry & Basil.
Tomato Leaf & Geranium
This is a green fresh scent, with a prickly sharp edge to it. The Geranium is more subtle but definitely there and adds a very soft floral touch to it. I wondered why the wax is red, and it’s because it contrasts with the white glass, giving it a stylish look (their words!). I like the look of the candle, but as a little bugbear, the way the sticker is stuck on (ever so slightly wonky) doesn’t make it look as luxurious as it should. There is just something about the label that doesn’t look as ‘polished’ as it could but this is a tiny details. The cute box it comes in with super adorable and makes it perfect for gifting. The burn time is 42 hours.
The Jo Malone from my memory has more richness and depth to it, but it also costs 14 times more!!!!!!!!! No brainer, I would choose this one as it’s still really lovely, if you like grassy, green scents.
Blackberry & Basil
This was a spontaneous buy but I couldn’t resist the gorgeous fill bodied blackberry scent. It’s sort of like a handful of squished blackberries – very lovely and fruity. The basil again is there quite subtly but it s absolutely present, making it far more interesting than just a fruity scent. This is a dark blue wax.
Even when these are not burning, the scent gently wafts across the room.
They absolutely passed the test – I am going got go back and buy one of each scent and a back up of these two particular ones because you cannot get candles this yummy for just £3 anywhere! I have to say these are still £16 on their website so there is a mega deal going on at the Wax Lyrical outlet stores. The diffusers and refills are also down to £3 – I think the blackberry would be a lovely constant scent for a room in the house.
Have you found any fab bargains lately?
