Didn’t I say this blog is about Make Up and Stuff?!
I am a fan of Ang Lee’s film and his versatility in terms of directing dramas (Brokeback Mountain), classics (Sense and Sensiblity) and action (Hulk). His new film post oscar sucess is called Lust, Caution and features veteran actors Tony Leung and Joan Chen. He chose newcomer, Tang Wei to be (argueably) the main protaganist.
As soon as I saw the screen shots of her in the film, she reminded me of the 30s and 40s Chinese beauties; round faces, pale skin, red lips – a type of beauty and elegance that is overlooked sometimes. Here is a pic of her from the film:
In comparison, some vintage posters:
These posters can be bought from here.
It was rumoured that Zhang Ziyi wanted this part desperately (despite the nudity?) but Ang Lee chose Tang Wei instead, and it’s not hard to see why.
For one thing, Tang Wei can act – Zhang Ziyi has her talents, but in actual acting, it is not (note: the lip quiver, signature move for “emotion” she does in every. single. film.)
There is something about Wei that makes you want to stare at her – an ethereal quality that far surpasses superficial, obvious beauty. I can’t wait to see more of her coming into her own as a young, talented actress.
