It’s the place in your home where you spend the most amount of time in one sitting. Why shouldn’t it be as clean and peaceful as the rest of your house?
The bedroom should be a sacred place of peace, rest and relaxation. After all, it’s where you go to reset your energy levels and mind for the next day; where you go to let go of your thoughts and have some comfort.
The issue is that you see it, every morning and every night. And whether you want to admit it or not, a messy bedroom has a negative effect on your energy and thoughts each and every day. It’s time to start treating yourself better by treating your bedroom as a respected extension of your daily wellness and health. There is a process, though, that makes this easier on you and therefore less likely to be resisted by your inner-child who doesn’t want to be told what to do, even by yourself.
I’m going to walk you through some steps to making your bedroom a cleaner, more peaceful place, and those steps start with the number one offender: clutter.
From Closets to Clutter and Old Peanut Butter
This room is not the catch-all for everything you can’t find a place for in the rest of your home. Dig in and move out the things you don’t need or that have been simply collecting dust and serving no purpose. Free up some space in which you can begin to move, and clean this scared area of your home. It’s fairly easy and doesn’t have to be made into a big chore. You have to be honest, though, and as you pick up each item, decide which ones belong in there and which ones don’t. the ones that don’t need to be relocated or discarded.
And yes, that includes that jar of peanut butter you’ve been meaning to throw out for weeks.
Reflect Your Truest Self By Seeing Your Reflection – In Every Surface Space You Can Make Free
This step follows suit with the de-cluttering and discarding of surplus items in your bedroom. The difference here is that you will start to actually see space you didn’t remember you had. We’ve all used chairs to “store” our clothing and left bottles or cans on our nightstands far longer than we were drinking from them. Your dresser and nightstand have drawers, and the things that don’t fit in them need to have a purpose aligned with your best state of mind and health. Clear off the tops of as many things as you can in your bedroom and let the surfaces shine again.
The Top-Down Method
The next step is to look up both literally and figuratively. When cleaning your bedroom (or any room for that matter) you need to start at the top and work your way down to the floor.
Go after the ceiling fans first, if you have any. Then the light fixtures on the ceilings and walls. Next tackle the windows and mirrors using glass cleaner (your choice of solution) and a soft, microfiber cloth. To avoid leaving streaks use an “S” motion when cleaning these surfaces because the circular one you’re used to actually puts some dirt and dust back onto whatever you’re cleaning.
Head to the dressers and nightstands that are no longer full of excess items and clutter and wipe them down with an appropriately designed solution. Your TV is also safe to wipe down using a soft, microfiber cloth. Alternately you can use a coffee filter or clean sock as well.
For difficult areas with more dust buildup try using a piece of tape to lift the dirt/debris from the surface or a hairdryer to blow down dust from light fixtures and lampshades.

Dust on the Bottle and Dust on Your Bed
Don’t think your bed and bedframe are free of this room-renewal process. You can use a soft, microfiber cloth the clean the frame of your bed and should do so at least twice a month to reduce buildup. Also, as tempting as it is to still shove something – or many things – under your bed, it simply makes it harder to clean under there if you have to make your way through an obstacle course of “secret” clutter to do it. That leads us to our next step: Storage
Bins, Totes and Hang-Bars, Oh My
Sometimes you can’t just simply move everything out or find it a new home. While I strongly suggest following these steps and ridding your bedroom of anything unnecessary, there will be things you just don’t want to let go of. And, things that are spread out that could be better-kept.
Small trays, mini-racks and hanging storage options are out there. Put them to use to help clean up the most precious space in your home. Earrings, watches, rings, hair-ties and countless other little things can all be put stowed away into more concise containers while still be accessible.
You can add a corner clothing rack to your room to temporarily store the clothing you go through while trying on various outfits as opposed to leaving it fall to the floor or be tossed on a chair. There are countless types of dividers and hang-bars out there that can help turn your closet into a majorly organized space with more room than you knew was there.
Walls get scuffed. Hands get dirty. Trash can pile up. When it comes to keeping your bedroom as a peaceful sanctuary, these things can be your enemy. The magic eraser pad is your friend, however, and you should use it to keep your walls free of unsightly marks. Also on your VIP list is the convenient, anti-bacterial wipe which you can use to clean germs off of doorknobs and light switches. Finally, you can be your own best friend by making sure the trash is removed from your bedroom on a daily basis.
