YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain in Corail Aquatique, Fuchsia Dore and Beige Aquarelle Review & Swatches!

Whilst I was on my Honeymoon, I found a Sephora, and they had a rather tempting 50% off all lip glosses offer on *squeal* which I had to participate in! I purchased some things I’ve been wanting but couldn’t bring myself to buy, like some Chanel and YSL glosses, as well as a few Sephora ones.

I purchased 3 of the YSL Glossy Stains which I had eyed up in Duty Free but luckily didn’t purchase as 50% discount is better!

YSL Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain Lip Colour in 7 14 and 19

They say: Glossy Stain from Yves Saint Laurent provides ultimate wear, ultimate shine and ultimate colour. The true revolution of this decade is the coming together of an extremely long–lasting stain formula and glossy shine, using a patented exclusive spatula for precise and smooth application. Pure water-soluble pigments fused in a transparent texture for non-sticky, long–lasting, high–shine gloss.

I’ve heard lots of good things about this lip product, and I do have a soft spot for YSL lip sticks…

First off, my shade choices. The stand was a bit of a tip and only some things had testers out.  That meant pulling out new products to have a nosy at what colour they were – there seemed to be quite a few reddish tones which I found hard to separate from each other (annoying).

I ended up with Corail Aquatique (coral peach), Fuchsia Dore (hot pink) and Beige Aquarelle (very nude oyster type shade):

As always with YSL, the packaging is luxe and heavyweight, which i like. It has that classic champagne like YSL scent which I also love – I don’t like scent in my lip or face products usually but I made an exception for this.

I like the window at the side of the product which shows you what colour you have – necessary if you own lots of these.

Love the sponge applicator, which is a really nice shape for getting into the corners of the mouth, and also have some springy give to them. The point is good too if you want to outline your lips slightly (as I did with the darker shade).

All three of the shades I bought contain fine shimmer.

Now the texture. How do I describe it?! It’s very unusual for a lip stain.

When I use lip stains, which I don’t very often I find a few problems;

a) they aren’t moisturising

b) they settle into lines

c) they dry and can feel ‘tight’ on the lips

d) they look patchy when they start to fade

e) the colour can be flat or…

f) too subtle

YSL’s Glossy stains answer a few of my lip stain ‘concerns’, so to speak.

a) Glossy stains a pretty moisturising – not like a hydrating lipstick but they don’t dry them out at all

b) Glossy stain did settle slightly into my lines but it wasn’t too unsightly (and it’s more apparent with darker shades)

c) Glossy stain didn’t feel tight – it did have a strange ‘film’ feel on my lips but it also still felt slightly wet and I could smack my lips together and move it around, for example. It doesn’t properly set.

d) Glossy stain fades very well, no nasty patches

e) These have a nice dimension to them, not flat at all and of course dry glossy, which is weird for a stain.

f) These are quite pigmented (the darker shades at least).

The texture as you can see is a liquid, it feels thinner than lip gloss but packs in a lot of pigment. I applied THIN layers, as thick layers seem to leave streaky marks.

Wiped away, you can see a stain is left:

Corail Aquatique is very much up my street, a very pretty peach with shimmer.  It’s quite subtle on my skin tone but I like this a lot.  It wore for about 4 hours:

Fuchsia Dore I bought as I wanted a pigmented strong colour. It’s quite a blue pink and this one I needed to layers as one seemed to settle into lines too much. Once dried it lasted well. Another thing with these stains is that they dry really glossy, almost like you’ve licked your lips:

Beige Aquarelle is my least favourite shade, it’s not beige more of a white shimmer. I am too old for this kind of stripper shade, HOWEVER it makes a nice top coat.

Verdict:

These cost £22.50 so at half price, I paid just over £10 for one so not too bad! I think the texture and formula is so unusual; long lasting, light, pigmented AND glossy! So I would definitely buy more, however, I am not as keen on the pale shades as on the darker more pigmented ones. Ergo, I would repurchase but only in the deeper or brighter shades.
