Subscription boxes are everywhere now for beauty, crafts, kids toys, geeky collectables, food – and why not? If there’s one that fits a genre you enjoy then it’s a nice way to try out stuff you usually wouldn’t.
As far as beauty boxes go I only get one (Glossybox) and whilst the contents aren’t always my thing there’s always someone else I can give it to plus I LOVE a good storage box (Marie Kondo would go crazy at the sight of a ceiling high pile of Glossyboxes). But I digress.
Inspire Me Korea satisfies this obsession with all things Korean lately; the beauty, the food, the drama, the music. They actually produce ‘Culture Boxes’ monthly starting at £12.90 a month. You get a mixture of all things Korean; could be art, snacks, beauty, trinkets and so on. I was sent their Limited Edition Beauty Box in collaboration with Whamsia.
Whamisa, a Korean skincare brand that makes fermented organic 100% natural products has been on my wish list for a while now – why haven’t I tried it yet? Because it is a higher price point than say, Innisfree or Etude House. Their famous Olive Leaf mist has been on my watch list for ages but I couldn’t quite bring myself to spend £25 on it. So this box was the perfect opportunity.
The box came inside a grey postal bag to protect it from the elements. As the box itself isn’t firm cardboard so it did get a little crushed on the way – just be aware this is not a Glossybox which you can keep for storage later.
I am going to be completely truthful about the appearance of this box and that is – it could do with some polish. The tissue paper could be less creased or perhaps changed to shredded paper, the bow could also be tied a little more neatly This is me being very critical however but it is something worth noting because other boxes I have received are spot on with presentation.
So you get a card clearly outlining what you get in the box!
One full size Olive Leaf Mist (yay!) and two sheet masks. You get one bottle sample and four sachet samples. The retail value is roughly £45 and you get free UK shipping – I have to say if I wasn’t sent this I would definitely purchase it because it’s like buying the mist and getting everything else for free.
So let’s look at the Olive Leaf Mist. It has an actual leaf in it! It’s like Kiehls and it’s raspberry toner all over again.
This mist is “water free” – it contains a mixture of extracts and is 92.5% natural so you do have to use it in 6 months. You only get 80ml which is not that much for a face mist but it’s really lovely – I like the woody type scent and it leaves my skin feeling quite soft and glowy. I do have a selection of face mists which I use after cleansing if I want something hydrating and I do like this one quite a lot as it feels like it is sealing moisture in.
Whilst it doesn’t contain “fragrance” it does list Bergamot, Geranium and Rosewood essential oils which explains the “scent”. Be aware of whether you can tolerate these scents before purchasing. Another thing – it does contain alcohol.
*Aloe Maculata Leaf Extract, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Olive, Caulerpa Lentillifera Extract, *Alcohol, *Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract Olive, *Rhodiola Rosea Root Extract, *Saururus Chinensis Leaf/Root Extract, *Angelica Keiskei Leaf/Stem Extract, *Dioscorea Opposita (Wild Yam) Root Extract, *Centella Asiatica Extract, *Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, *Lactobacillus/Rice Ferment, *Lactobacillus/Avena Satica (Oat) Ferment Extract Filtrate,*Lactobacillus/Chrysanthemum Sinense Flower Ferment Filtrate,*Lactobacillus/Nelumbium Speciosum Flower Ferment Filtrate, *Lactobacillus/Dandelion Leaf/Root Extract Ferment Filtrate, Evernia Prunastri (Oakmoss) Extract Oakmoss, Cetraria Islandica Extract, **Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, **Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, **Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Natto Gum, ***Propanediol, Xanthan Gum, Cyamopsis Tetragonoloba (Guar) Gum, Aniba Rosaeodora (Rosewood) Wood Oil, Geranium Maculatum Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil.
I really like that all these products have stickers on them translating the ingredients to English so you don’t have to second guess that is in them (presuming you can’t understand Korean of course!).
The next thing in this box is two sheet masks. Both of the Whamisa ones are on the more expensive side for a single sheet mask (a pack of 6 costs $25) but then again, one is a hydro gel mask which is thicker and softer than regular paper and the other is on a REAL kelp sheet! How cool is that!
Also the ingredients are organic and from what I can see there’s nothing irritating in there.
Using these were a pleasure – I must admit I don’t usually spend more than $3 a sheet mask so I wouldn’t think to buy these Whamisa ones but I found they fit my face nicely and really moisturised. There’s a lot of serum left over so I used these over my arms after a shower. Hydro gel masks tend to be a bit slippy so you need to lie down unless you want it moving around.
I do have to say though, they are both really quite scented (organically mind) but SCENTED. I don’t mind it but I have used plenty of masks where the smell has been intolerable as I don’t like scented face products at all (what’s the need anyway?).
Now the bits and bobs:
I have already used these sachets up and with the exception of the eye essence, they only lasted one application. The cleansing oil would last 2 weeks or so I reckon.
Once again, everything was nice to use and caused zero irritation despite having this flowery smell. The water cream was my favourite – although light it made my skin glow so much throughout the day. Since I only used the products once it’s hard to say whether it’s worth buying the full size bottle but if I were to seek out any, it would be the water cream.
The cleansing oil is light textured and took make up off easily without being dry and left no residue. I haven’t tried any Korean cleansing oils so far that I’ve liked apart from this one.
All in all, this box is a FAB purchase if you want to try:
– Korean skincare
– Natural/Organic/Green beauty products
Whamisa is a higher end Korean brand so you are getting a good deal here.
