I recently got this little selection box in the post and I was like Ooooooohhhh, mattes. Then, Oooohhhhh Reds.
See I am not a red girl. My bold lip is all about the hot pink. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t love to play with reds, and am always on the hunt for the right kind of shade (which I am still not sure about!).
So affordable natural beauty brands B. Beauty have a new range of matte red lipsticks inspired by 4 ladies;
Alexa, Suki, Dita and Isabella named after four famous ladies of course.
Ok so first thoughts…
Here are the colours – they look pretty similar really in the tube. And here is where it’s great to be able to try out all four shades and see what the slight but significant difference is. Chances are you won’t need all four because there will be one that will make you face pop!
Now I like a matte because I think it looks glam and it is less likely to rub off on my kids if they come for a smooch (I don’t wear it if I am with them generally just for going out, but they like to kiss me all the time!). However I have dry lips so many mattes do not work on me, and once you balm underneath, it is not the same.
These have a slightly dry and powdery feel when swatching but I have never used a TRUE matte lipstick that was creamy too – I think the dryness is expected 99% of the time. It is no where near as dry and difficult to use as MAC Retro mattes, for example, which are unbearably dry on my lips. I do not think they are hydrating, but they don’t destroy my lips, which is a bonus.
They are pigmented too. Nice matte finish – not so dry it makes your lips look like prunes. There’s something soft about them.
(This is based on my poor eyesight by the way)
Alexa – Deep true blue red
Suki – Medium yellow based red
Dita – Medium blue based red
Isabella – Orange red
I usually like a fun light to medium orange red and stay away from red that are too deep or too blue.
Here are the 4 shades –
I said blue reds are not my thing but actually, Alexa is my favourite despite being the deepest and the bluest. It goes to show you need to try a red on. Because this is red it is not garish and makes my lips look almost rosey.
Dita is a brighter, lighter more orangey version of Alexa, quite a nice every day one to wear.
Suki is like the blue based version of Dita, again quite a nice every day red, it just depends what base you want to your lipstick.
Orange reds are usually my thing but I did not like Isabella on my skintone at all – it was TOO orange for me. However it could work well on someone fairer.
